When Does an Oil Meter Need MID Certification?

A digital oil meter pays off in any workshop: every fill is measured and losses fall. But if the meter reading becomes the basis of a sale invoiced to a customer, the instrument must meet legal metrology rules.

What Is MID?

MID is short for the EU Measuring Instruments Directive (2014/32/EU). In Turkey it is applied through the Measuring Instruments Regulation (2014/32/EU), published in the Official Gazette on 29 June 2016. Systems that continuously and dynamically measure quantities of liquids other than water, such as oil, fall under MI-005.

Measuring for Internal Use

A meter you use to track oil dispensed to vehicles, spot stock differences or see consumption per technician is a management tool. Standard digital meters with ±0.3% accuracy and meters with pulsers are widely used for this. To record who dispensed how much and when, you can install the FCS fluid control system or a computer-controlled oil management system.

Selling by Measured Quantity

If you sell oil to customers by the litre, the meter reading becomes the basis of a commercial transaction. Fair trade is one of the aims of legal metrological control. In that case you may need an MID MI-005 compliant, certified meter.

  • RAASM's MID-certified digital meters and guns have IP65 protection and store 2,000 fills.
  • Installation, sealing and periodic checks of a certified meter follow the regulations.

If you are not sure which case applies to your business, we recommend consulting the competent authority or an approved body. We support you with product selection and installation.

Whatever the Meter: Calibration

A worn meter measures wrongly, and the difference shows up in stock or on invoices. To have your existing meters checked regularly, see our digital oil meter calibration service.
